Wave of ATM scams

This is not the first time that someone has tried to hack ATMs in Paksitan. Last year HBL reported that over 559 customers’ accounts were compromised by hackers and over Rs 10 million were stolen from them.

In 2016, FIA arrested a Chinese national for stealing data and money using skimming devices on an ATM. After the news of countrywide ATM hacking broke, FIA made multiple arrests and sent several individuals to jail. FIA says that banks still use obsolete and vulnerable technology in ATMs which makes them more susceptible to hacks.

State Bank of Pakistan, taking notice, issued directions to enhance security banks for installing Europay MasterCard Visa (EMV) system by 30th June, 2018.
